Project Summary

The project involves the assessment of a novel post combustion capture of carbon dioxide (PCC) process under Australian conditions.  Partnering in Innovation Inc. of Delaware, USA has proposed a CO2 capture process which uses high pressure water to selectively dissolve CO2 from thermal power plant flue gas.  The dissolved CO2 is later released as the water pressure is reduced and then collected for subsequent compression and disposal.   A proportion of the energy used to compress the flue gas is proposed to be recovered via expansion turbines.   The main advantage of the technology over existing amine based processes is that water is both inexpensive as a solvent and is expected to more easily meet environmental requirements for disposal.

The project will assess the suitability of the technology for an Australian coal fired power plant application.   This will involve evaluation of the engineering practicalities of the large-scale application of the process and a subsequent high level techno-economic assessment of the technology.
