Project Summary

Research will be conducted, based on ‘Solvent precipitating systems’, to examine the fluid handling and equipment issues for processing slurry systems as well as developing the modelling capability needed for scale up. A successful project outcome will accelerate the commercialisation of potassium carbonate capture technology and provide a low cost capture process for both post and pre-combustion applications for black and brown coal power stations.

CO2CRC CCS Cost Reduction Project: Solvent Precipitation System - Final Report

The CO2CRC has been developing a novel precipitating potassium carbonate solvent absorption process, known as UNO MK 3. This capture process has the potential to have significantly lower environmental impacts and costs than amine-based solvent processes. A pilot plant was built to demonstrate this process at The University of Melbourne and is the focus of this report.

Both the simulated and plant demonstrated results show how process efficiency can be improved by increasing the potassium carbonate solvent concentration, operating with a higher CO2 feed gas concentration and/or by adding a rate promoter. Limitations in the pilot plant’s equipment inhibited the project’s ability to assess fluid handling and equipment issues for the slurry process.
